Sustainability coordination within forerunning Nordic municipalities – Exploring structural challenges across departmental silos and hierarchies

Due to changes in status and role of sustainability efforts municipalities over time there is an increased pressure adopt interdisciplinary approach sustainability. Research has especially emphasised the broad perspective on cooperative challenge, while less emphasis been put directly specific intra-organisational challenge nurturing cross-departmental cooperation. The article aims provide explorative empirical insight into coordinators’ internal organise support innovative forms study sheds light two different approaches coordination based separate research studies forerunning Scandinavian municipalities. It shows how five structural factors: capacity, scope, willingness, mandates resources, are enacted differently centralised Växjö (Sweden) decentralised Aarhus (Denmark). conclusion highlights delicate work needed create engagement with across differences departmental scopings hierarchical distribution resources.
